Chako Van Leeuwen, President
A talented actress in Japan, Chako starred in forty-seven films in her late teens. She is credited with saving one of Japan’s major studios from financial ruin with her successful films. Afterward, Chako brought her acting career to a close and moved to California in the 1970’s to study film production under legend Roger Corman. She first produced and co-directed Tender Loving Care, which grossed its production costs ten times over.
In 1978, she produced Piranha under United Artists, which became one of the greatest success stories of independent filmmaking. Piranha was produced for $800,000 and grossed an extraordinary $30,000,000 worldwide. This picture was Joe Dante’s directorial debut (Small Soldiers, Gremlins) as well as John Sayles screenplay debut (Lone Star, The Secret of Ran Inish, Sunshine State), who is now one of the most respected and renowned figures in the world of independent film production.
Following the tradition of discovering the finest in new mega-talent, Chako's next installment in the financially successful franchise, Piranha II, was helmed by James Cameron (Terminator, Titanic, Avatar).
Next, Chako went on to produce Forever & Beyond and Raging Angels, a suspense/thriller based on spiritual warfare, starring Academy Award-nominated Diane Ladd (Rambling Rose, Chinatown, Inland Empire) and Sean Patrick Flannery (Powder, Boondock Saints, The Young Indiana Jones).
Chako is currently producing Piranha 3D, directed by Alexander Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Mirrors), as well as IX: Destiny's Warrior, a historical action-adventure love story with supernatural elements.
